Two first episodes today, one mind-numbingly dull and the other with a cat girl. Alright, not quite that bad. The bigger question I had was would either Omamori Himari or Ookami Kakushi be able to challenge Ladies versus Butlers for top on my list, or at least challenge Chu-Bra at the bottom?Starting first with Omamori Himari; which is the story of a high school student who suddenly finds himself protected from monsters by a cat girl samurai. He’s also allergic to cats, which after Nyan Koi! means that cat allergies were so last season. Amakawa Yuuto is the last living descendant of this line if hunters, though to this point in his life he has been protected. Himari, who is the samurai is sworn to protect him as his protection wears off and does so in the most sexually overt ways possible. Add in a jealous childhood friend in Kuzaki Rinko and you pretty much have a really generic series.
The first episode seemed to just ooze blandness. It was hard to really find anything of value from a rather poor opening episode, even the montage of Rinko’s defeats to Himari seemed rather tired and cliched. Absolutely no way I can continue watching this.
Completely Subjective Episode Score: 56/100
Ookami Kakushi was the second of today’s episodes, and it at least started off interesting. It starts off with protagonist Kuzumi Hiroshi being chased around a playground by a clearly non-human Tsumuhana Isuzu who confesses her love for him in a very unwelcome way. Then they are interrupted by an outsider brandishing a scythe.
The episode really begins with Hiroshi and his family’s arrival in Jogamachi. There he is tackled by Izumi, who is the first of many of his admirers in the village. He meets the new students at school and is popular with everyone despite having no distinguishable features at all, which makes this all seem a bit like Ryukishi07’s To Heart 2. So when he is nearly taken away by another student, Kushinada Nemuru intervenes and scares him off. As we find out later, Nemuru splits time between being hated by most students and killing them off.
For a first episode, this was actually pretty good and at least gives it some separation from the pack this season. Though it lacked a lot of the edge that I was expecting, there is still something noticeable in the air in this town even before all the crazy stuff happens near the end. Since I will be continuing on, I’d probably want to see more of the older district since that seemed peculiar.
Completely Subjective Episode Score: 84/100
