The Bad Spring 2015 Anime Season Preview

denpakyoushi

Denpa Kyoushi

Genres: Comedy, Harem, School
Studio: A-1 Pictures
Director: Satou Masato
Lazy Plot Synopsis: Despite being a genius with lots to contribute to the world, the 17-year-old NEET Junichirou is forced into the labor market by his younger sister. Fortunately, there are unconventional schools with unconventional students willing to hire him because reasons.
What I Knew About This Before I Did Research: I actually read the manga of this for a little while and I hope for the sake of the audience this is only 12 episodes and never gets sequels. Basically, it starts out fine with character development and introducing new characters. Then it continued to introduce new characters and to continue running more characters had to be introduced. Then there were so many that it was hard to even remember them except by the one defining trait that Junichirou called them, which simply exposed how little developed the characters were after all. So basically this show will go to shit if it has any length at all.
What I Think of It After Research: The director spent 4 and a half years directing Detective Conan episodes. That seems like a job that could be run on autopilot if I’m honest.

Diamond no Ace: Second Season

Genres: Baseball, Comedy, Shounen
Studio: Madhouse
Director: N/A presumably Mitsuyuki Masuhara continuing for another run.
Lazy Plot Synopsis: A failure of a middle school pitcher is recruited by a high school in Tokyo to pitch and he must work his way up to become the team’s ace pitcher.
What I Knew About This Before I Did Research: Again, Dream loves this shit. He has great taste in sports anime, so if you like sports anime you are already watching this.
What I Think of It After Research: The 75 episode first season seems to be pushing it as far as plot progression. Maybe the 2nd and 3rd seasons will be shorter.

Digimon Adventure tri

Genres: Fantasy, Adventure, Cash Grab
Studio: Toei Animation
Director: Motonaga Keitarou
Lazy Plot Synopsis: Remember the first Digimon series that was on TV everywhere. That was before your time? Fuck, I’m old. Anyway, they put the kids from that show in high school and I bet the make more friends and shit. Because friends are awesome, especially when they can turn into huge beasts that can shoot fire and lasers.
What I Knew About This Before I Did Research: It’s been over 15 years since this franchise started, so that marks time for another cash grab.
What I Think of It After Research: The director Motonaga has credits ranging from Legend of the Galactic Heroes all the way to School Days and Akane-iro ni Somaru Saka. I will be disappointed if we don’t have an ending that is nowhere near the heights of a protagonist being brutally murdered or a the blood related sister winning.

Duel Masters VSR

Genres: Children’s Card Game, Cash Grab
Studio: Ascension
Director: Does It Matter
Lazy Plot Synopsis: Tired of battling evil with children’s card games, a group of kids decide that they want to take on a the world of telecommunications by developing faster VSR technology.
What I Knew About This Before I Did Research: Duel Masters is even more obscure than other shows of the genre, but they need to keep making them to keep kids buying them.
What I Think of It After Research: This game died outside of Japan NINE YEARS AGO, so the market is spread pretty thin almost everywhere in the world.

Dungeon ni Deai wo Motomeru no wa Machigatteiru Darou ka?

Genres: Comedy, Action, Harem, Fantasy
Studio: J.C. Staff
Director: Yamakawa Yoshiki
Lazy Plot Synopsis: A young adventurer forms a bond with a goddess that allows him to level up his stats faster in the dungeon and attracts all sorts of attention from women around the village.
What I Knew About This Before I Did Research: I’m actually mostly caught up on the manga version of this. You’re thinking, “of course he would since this is obviously trash” and you would be correct. It’s a pretty fun manga that isn’t really that serious since the whole RPG component is a part of this show’s universe. That said, this adaptation is probably going to be terrible.
What I Think of It After Research: J.C. Staff fills me with no confidence in a genre I already have little time for. I think this will ultimately end up being the tolerable Classy Anime of the season as opposed to Awful Classy or Sad Classy.

  1. I am actually quite interested in how Arslan Senki will turn out, since it was originally written by Tanaka Yoshiki, of Legend of Galactic Heroes fame.

  2. I read them, these posts that is. Very informative. Thanks, Emperor.

What are you going to watch, if anything at all?
