The Bad Spring 2015 Anime Season Preview

Eikoku Ikke, Nihon o Taberu

Genres: Road Trip
Studio: NHK
Director: Rareko (I don’t know either)
Lazy Plot Synopsis: A guy reads a book then forces his family to take a road trip around Japan to eat a bunch of food.
What I Knew About This Before I Did Research: Nothing
What I Think of It After Research: This director has done a few of the minimally animated six minute shorts that have aired on NHK over the years. This one has me questioning the realism of the scenario from the beginning. What kind of jobs do the parents have that allow them to take over 3 months off to go to Japan with their kids?

Etotama

Genres: Comedy, Fantasy
Studio: Shirogumi
Director: Oizaki Fumitoshi
Lazy Plot Synopsis: An anthropomorphized cat moves in with a high school boy who inexplicably lives alone in Akihabara and this is supposed to help her become part of the Chinese zodiac
What I Knew About This Before I Did Research: Nothing
What I Think of It After Research: This production studio hasn’t really done much since the ice skating CG crapfest Pretty Rhythm four years ago. They’ve been involved in a Doraemon film and the live action version of Parasyte, but that’s only because you need CG to make people realize the manga is better. This is probably going to be heavily CG too and I have no doubt that attaching “from the director of Astarotte’s Toy” will make this sell amazingly. It may well be another five years before they try again.

Fate/stay Night: Unlimited Blade Works 2nd Season

Genres: Action, Fantasy, Supernatural
Studio: ufotable
Director: Miura Takahiro
Lazy Plot Synopsis: Shirou takes up precious screen time when the audience really just wants to see Rin reaction faces and Saber doing stuff with maybe a little Archer thrown in too.
What I Knew About This Before I Did Research: I have the dumbest reason in the world for having not seen the first season or Fate/Zero. I’m not going to reveal it here obviously, but I at least know some of the Type Moon memes.
What I Think of It After Research: I don’t see a certain writer involved with this in the credits, so I think it will probably end up being pretty decent. I think I need to watch that show that will allow me to watch Fate/Zero first though.

Ghost in the Shell Arise: Alternative Architecture

Genres: Action, Sci-Fi, Editing
Studio: Production I.G
Director: Kazuchika Kise
Lazy Plot Synopsis: Did you see the films? Then wait two months to see the new material.
What I Knew About This Before I Did Research: I guess the films didn’t do as well as they should have because they’ve brought them to TV in an edited format to try to sell them again to much of the same audience.
What I Think of It After Research: I really need to get around to watch Stand Alone Complex at some point. I just never seem to be able to get it in. Anyway, this is a lead in to yet another film adaptation coming in June, so to save time I’d still recommend watching the films and the last two episodes…then waiting around for the film to get released here which will be a long, long time without piracy involved.

Gintama°

Genres: Comedy, Action, Parody, Shounen
Studio: Sunrise
Director: N/A
Lazy Plot Synopsis: This show is a case study in popularity, ranking systems and survivorship bias.
What I Knew About This Before I Did Research: I guess this show’s popular enough to keep getting new releases. I’m waiting for them to start mocking the audience for continuing to watch and the staff to just stop giving fucks.
What I Think of It After Research: I will tell you something very important here. This show has levels of hilarity unseen since people who use the word banter unironically became funny themselves folks. Nah, I can’t do it. How does that guy keep coming up with such original material seemingly on the cusp. It has to be multiple people. Anyway, keep reading and maybe I’ll try again.

  1. I am actually quite interested in how Arslan Senki will turn out, since it was originally written by Tanaka Yoshiki, of Legend of Galactic Heroes fame.

  2. I read them, these posts that is. Very informative. Thanks, Emperor.

What are you going to watch, if anything at all?
