The Bad Spring 2015 Anime Season Preview

Genres: Comedy
Studio: Mappa
Director: Uemura Yutaka
Lazy Plot Synopsis: The protagonist has his spirit separated from his body. That’s all I have to fucking work with on this plot.
What I Knew About This Before I Did Research: Absolutely Nothing.
What I Think of It After Research: So this is from a director who apparently was fired by Gainax after everyone important had already left, so you can see the low standard this series has. The fact that he found work again as a director instead of running off trying to save anime or comparing idols to the American military speaks volumes to Uemura’s character. Maybe he’s learned from that and will make something better than Dantalion this time. However, judging by the fact there’s not much to go on by now and that this sentence is replacing several hundred words I devoted to attacking the cult of celebrity, I’m going to say this will probably not be any good.

Genres: Comedy, Seinen
Studio: Pierrot Plus
Director: Kudou Masashi
Lazy Plot Synopsis: This stars a girl who can see dead people…and other supernatural phenomena going through her normal life as a high school student.
What I Knew About This Before I Did Research: This is a manga adaptation, and that’s it.
What I Think of It After Research: I don’t think this show is going to be anything super special. Maybe just non-threatening plots that focus on individual bits of characters lives in and around the school. The director has previously done shows with a certain perversion and those latter seasons of Hayate that you were better off not watching. I’m going to say this will be nothing more than visually interesting and quickly forgettable.

Robot Girls Z+

Genres: Comedy, Filth, Parody
Studio: Toei Animation
Director: Ikehata Hiroshi
Lazy Plot Synopsis: Girls based on 70s and 80s Super Robots destroy cities and end up in inexplicably perverted situations where they lose their clothes.
What I Knew About This Before I Did Research: This is the type of show that is going to be very funny to a small number of people who get the tropes. The rest wonder what the hell is going on.
What I Think of It After Research: I’m in the former group, and I’m willing to put up with the dumb scenarios this show crafts. For the record, this will be a show that comes out once a month for the 3 months of the season which is exactly as the first season aired. You will also feel sympathetic for how bad the villains have it while the heroes just screw things up for the rest of the people.

Saint Seiya: Soul of Gold

Genres: Action, Shounen
Studio: Toei Animation
Director: Furuta Takeshi
Lazy Plot Synopsis: It’s Saint Seiya, you know the series filled with battles involving guys in camp costumes from the 80s. That’s what it is only it is now airing in 20XX.
What I Knew About This Before I Did Research: I don’t really know much about Saint Seiya to be perfectly honest. It’s too camp for me and it was before my time anyway. I do know that it is best experienced dubbed in Italian.
What I Think of It After Research: This is a net animation so it will likely be in a short format. That’s why they brought in a director whose only previous directorial credit was Mangaka-san to Assistant-san because that translates perfectly into a shounen action franchise that was popular in the 80s.

Shokugeki no Souma

Genres: Cooking, Comedy, Classy, Shounen Filth
Studio: J.C. Staff
Director: Yonetani Yoshitomo
Lazy Plot Synopsis: A culinary master enrolls his son at an elite school with a low graduation rate and the bro characters and classy girls that come with it.
What I Knew About This Before I Did Research: Remember when Jump actually produced manga that you weren’t totally embarrassed to read in public? Wait, that was never, but it would have seemed more plausible a while back.
What I Think of It After Research: This is a cooking series that somehow features battles in the kitchen. I don’t know about you, but that seems dangerous with all of the knives and open flames around. Someone could get hurt you know. Souma at least seems like an interesting character in mentality, but I imagine the characters around him will annoy anyone looking for a quality show.

  1. I am actually quite interested in how Arslan Senki will turn out, since it was originally written by Tanaka Yoshiki, of Legend of Galactic Heroes fame.

  2. I read them, these posts that is. Very informative. Thanks, Emperor.

What are you going to watch, if anything at all?
