12 Days of Something V: Working Towards the End

nisekoi24aThe 2nd season of Nisekoi aired earlier this year. It didn’t really do anything with progression of the plot in that particular realm. In the manga, however, there was plenty of progression towards a resolution of the harem at the center of the story. It’s really disappointing how that is turning out. The Bad Spring 2015 Anime Season Preview

Sorry, the Prison School anime is next season.
Sorry, the Prison School anime is next season.

I thought I would never come back to writing posts like these. They never turn out to work, I spend a ton of time and effort and no one really reads them anyway. However, I really needed something, anything to write about this season that wasn’t terribly meta or utterly depressing. So here I am back again to write about the upcoming season and not a single one of you will actually read this paragraph.

The obvious caveats that go with this are numerous. If you’ve listened to any of the recent Friday Anime Podcast season preview episodes, I’m the guy who knows fuck all about studios and who has a taste worse than Kelloggs, but no one bothers anymore about saying that because I’m beyond hope. So don’t expect to be informed by any of this.

It’s really easy to call most things that Shaft produces over-directed, but it does feel hard to call Nisekoi anything but that so far. I’ve known the anime adaptation has been on the cards for a while having read the manga, but I do wonder if there wasn’t enough to be pulled from the source in this adaptation. I also wonder as a reader of the manga if I’m too inclined to hold the source material against this adaptation.

The Coming Season of Discontent

A picture from the real Season of Discontent. That pile of trash does not represent the anime this season.

“No man really knows about other human beings. The best he can do is to suppose that they are like himself.”
― John Steinbeck, The Winter Of Our Discontent

I suppose I should preface this season preview post as coming on the basis of a rough couple of weeks personally and an evening of impromptu off-road driving. Anyway, winter usually is a dead period for my anime viewing and because of the quote I used above I can only suppose it is the same for you my lone reader. I’ve been in the anime viewing business for a long time, so I’m going to spend the time reflecting on all the great anime that I watched in the winter season of 2004. That’s because everyone gets jaded and remembers how good things were, right?

Let’s see, there was Paranoia Agent, Kon’s TV masterpiece which was surreal and filled with important social commentary at the same time. That really wouldn’t come to air now would it? Then I also watched, what was it…

The winter of 2004 was shit.
